The African Jimi Hendrix

Last week passed in a blur, and before I knew it Saturday had arrived. I spent the day in luxury – lying by the side of the pool at Ocean Bay hotel… which always makes me feel like I am on holiday. After sufficient chilling and having taken advantage of Happy Hour (70pence for a glass of wine – you can see where my weekly budget goes) we relocated back to Helen’s and had the biggest treat of all – stilton and camembert! My first good cheese since the night before I left England – and boy did I enjoy it. Helen brought it back with her and it was so good! We were relatively modest with our portions – I think it felt like such an indulgence, and so rich after a diet of vegetables and rice, we could only manage small amounts.

After our little cheese fest we went to Alliance Française. The cultural centre is a really lovely place – an oasis of calm just off the madness of Kairaba Avenue, which serves as an education centre, a theatre, a cinema and a venue for concerts and live productions. I had only ever been once during the day when I met my language teacher there for a Wolof lesson, but in the evening it was totally transformed.

We went there to see Vieux Fark Toure – a Malian singer who has been described as the Jimi Hendrix of North Africa. He was fantastic, as was the warm up band on before him, and it felt like a really special evening. The theatre is open air, so you could listen to the music under a sky full of stars, and you could tell that everyone was really having a good time. It was one of the moments where I wished my parents could have been there – they would have absolutely loved the music and the atmosphere. Maybe he will do a tour in Spain!
